Post-Operative Endodontic Instructions

  1. You have been given a long-acting local anesthetic. This anesthetic may last as long as 10-12 hours or longer. Avoid chewing in the area of operation to alleviate trauma to the lip.
  2. After the anesthetic disappears, it is normal to experience mild to moderate discomfort for several days. Take anti-inflammatory analgesics such as aspirin, Ibuprofen (Advil) or Naprosyn (Aleve) as needed. Please note that patients who have bleeding disorders or are on anti-coagulant therapy should avoid these medications.
  3. Prescription analgesics such as codeine or hydrocodone may also be provided.
  4. Continue to take any antibiotics you may have been prescribed until the prescription is completed.
  5. All posterior teeth (bicuspids and molars) and some anterior teeth (cuspids and incisors) will require partial or full coverage (crowns or onlays) to protect them. Schedule an appointment with your general dentist to have these restorations placed as soon as practical. It is advisable to avoid chewing aggressively in this area until these restorations are placed.
  6. Although the rate of success for endodontic procedures performed by our office is extremely high, problems can arise. Please inform our office, if you experience prolonged pain or swelling.
  7. If you experience any adverse reaction to the medications, discontinue the medication and contact the office immediately.
  8. You may receive a card requesting you to contact us to schedule a recall visit, which will allow us to monitor the progress of your treatment. Schedule an appointment for the recall when you receive this card, unless you have been advised otherwise. The recall visit is provided at no charge to you.
  9. We wish to express our appreciation for the confidence you have placed in us. We would like to maintain that confidence. Please contact our staff or the doctor directly, if you feel we can serve you better.
