Interim Appointment Instructions

  1. You may have been given a long-acting local anesthetic. This anesthetic may last as long as 10-12 hours or longer. Avoid chewing in the operated area to alleviate trauma to the lip.
  2. After the anesthetic disappears, it is normal to experience mild to moderate discomfort up to 3-4 days or longer. Take anti-inflammatory analgesics such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil) as needed. Prescription analgesics may be prescribed as necessary.
  3. If you have sustained an infection, antibiotics may have been prescribed. Follow the directions carefully and take the medication until the entire prescription has been consumed.
  4. If a significant infection has been sustained, your tooth may have been left open to drain. A small sponge may have been left in the access cavity to prevent debris from occluding this space. Avoid chewing in this area. To facilitate drainage, rinse the area vigorously with warm saline rinses at least 5-6 times daily, particularly after meals. Saline solution should be composed of ¼ teaspoon of salt per 8-10 oz. glass of warm water.
  5. Swelling can accompany significant infections. After initial treatment, swelling may increase slightly. Within 24-48 hours, the swelling should dissipate gradually. Contact our office in the event that this does not occur.
  6. Temporary restorations may have been placed. Do not chew aggressively on these restorations. You may brush normally; however, flossing this area should be avoided.
  7. Emergency endodontic services are performed to relieve pain. A regular endodontic appointment should be scheduled as soon as practical to avoid complications.
  8. Please complete the medical history and patient information form in addition to all insurance forms prior to your next appointment. (Your insurance co-payment or fee will be collected on the day of treatment.)
